One of the best Newbery-Award-winning novels and just a great book. Told in two styles. The first part is a sort of mythic telling of how Maniac Magee changed race relations in a small town. The second part is a more realistic personal…

This novel talked about a boy named Jeffrey, who was orphaned after his parents were killed in a tram derailment. I was impressed with all of the things Jeffrey accomplished in the story because his achievements were all unique. The…

I remember enjoying this book when I was a kid, so I decided to revisit it. I think I liked it even more now in adulthood. Jeffrey Magee is such a good kid: brave, kind, and curious. He wants people to treat one another with kindness and…

I didn't know if I'd like this book or not, the first few chapters, but as I continued reading, there are so many more deeper aspects to the story. Varying themes are early death of parents, abandonment, homelessness, surviving alone, and…

I listened to maniac Magee and it is about a white boy who lives in a segregated city and doesn’t care if he is white or black. He lives in a black home and is allergic to pizza. Finally he is told to go to the white side of the city and…

Nostalgia is an interesting thing. One looks back at one's childhood, and remembers everything (or at least most things) with fondness, and glosses over the not-so-pleasant things. And so it is with books that one read as a child. One…

I read this book as a child and recently revisited it with my 4th grade students. It is an amazing book - it's engaging, entertaining, and thought provoking. It's on the top of my list for the students I have who struggle to stay engaged…

Maniac Magee differs from the famous Forest Gump in that his life, rather than being like a box of chocolates is like an egg. When you find yourself in hot water you become pretty tough, but underneath your shell you also become a very…

I love this book so, so much. "Maniac Magee" is both a legendary book and character. I was privileged to read this as a kid, and I'm now checking this out for my much younger sibling. I think classic books like these should be recommended…

This is a favorite from childhood. It's A Newberry winner and very deserving. Maniac Magee is an orphan who looks for the place he belongs in odd places. It's full of humor and heart.

One can and should relive Magee's adventure as often as possible. I read this book to my sixth graders every year mainly because it's Spinelli, no more needs to be said. However the themes, juxtapositions, and the rich figurative language…

"Everyone knows the story of a kid is two parts legend, one part fiction, and one part snowball." -Maniac Magee, more or less. I paraphrased a little.
