As the Israel-Hamas war rages, I found it particularly poignant to watch this dramatic musical about the lives of the Jewish residents of a rural hamlet in Russia in the late 1800s or early 1900s. The ending is stunning.

A sometimes bittersweet but uplifting celebration of Jewish culture, the 1971 film extends beyond a specific ethnic appeal to explore the universal bonds and conflicts between parents and their children, and how the sometimes immutable…

Classic wonderful! Commentary also.

It takes a very special film (or in this case a musical film) to blend comedy and drama so well that it fits equally well in both categories, but 'Fiddler on the Roof' manages to dance between both genres delicately, never bending too far…

is it from this that sprang the practice of 'being a yenta'? if so, a pox on it, for the practice is a scourge across the land. shout out to kristen kelleher: thought you bossy at the time , but i was fighting the crush i had upon seeing…

I had no idea there'd be so much comedy in this musical. Not at all an unpleasant surprise. And it amazes me that Topol was only in his thirties when he played this role, with makeup to give him wrinkles and padding to give him a paunch.

Fiddler on the Roof is a historical film about religious tradition. It teaches outdated messages about family, love, tradition, friendship, and hope. These are outdated lifestyles because our culture has finally embraced a world of…

One of the best loved musicals of the 70s, based on the hit Broadway play. There was some controversy when Israeli actor Chaim Topol was cast, rather than the actor who originated the role of Tevye, Zero Mostel. But it's become his…

A long but excellent adaptation of the famous play: both a heartwarming and realistic depiction of a poor, close-knit Jewish family in 1910 Russia. The tender-hearted father's bark is definitely worse than his bite as he responds to family…

Outstanding film starring the incomparable Topol as a poor, Jewish milkman in a village in Czarist Russia and featuring Isaac Stern in the most jaw-dropping violin virtuosity I’ve ever heard. My ONLY complaint about this DVD is that the…
