I have ready many books about WWII and this is my favorite. It has a grand sweep and a dramatic love story like Dr Zhivago. There is untranslated French in it which I enjoyed but would be frustrating if you didn’t have at least a bit of…

An amazingly impactful story of the tragedy that unfolded in Hungary during WWII. What you may think happened is so much worse in reality for those impacted by Hitler’s madness. A must read.

I love a good WW2 drama, this one didn't grab me as much as I thought it would. It does provoke some thoughts after though. The characters were well developed and the story easy to follow. I did find that it was longer than it needed to…

I got half way through the book and was so bored by it, I didn't bother completing it. Author is too wordy and the plot is too slow. There are far better reads in this genre.

Beautifully written book full of hope and heroics. As others have suggested, some editing would sharpen the plot development, it was 'a tad long'. Would highly recommend.

I like this book, once I got past the first 200 pages. The first part of the book dragged on and gave too much detail then it really picked up.

Julie Orringer's debut novel is brilliant. After a slow beginning the story soars with a passionate love affair and then begins to tell the real story of how people survive the unbearable. Best book of the year.
