All three sisters seemed too scary for me to enjoy reading about, so I stopped reading almost immediately.

This is snappy! The narrator's peculiar view of her world, and the voice with which she expresses that view, make the book feel unique. This is grounded in a specific time and place (rural England, just after World War II) and the…

It was a sheer delight to meet Miss Flavia de Luce!! What an incredibly creative character she is. To quote Bradley, "She is an amalgam of burning enthusiasm, curiosity, energy, youthful idealism, and frightening fearlessness...a real…

Overall it worked for me as a weird and charming and different perspective from which to frame a British postwar mystery. The glee Flavia takes in her dark preoccupations keep it from falling into too stale a "kid genius" trope.

The central character and her family relationships are perhaps a bit too quirky - the book never commits sufficiently to a patently unrealistic, but charmingly so, approach. It felt all a bit too twee, which did not stand up well to the…

What a nicely written story of an 11 year old girl that works to solve a murder. Flavia’s first love is chemistry. She has her own laboratory in the attic of her home and loves the formulas and experimentation. She discovers the body of a…

I wanted so to like this book but I just couldn't get into the heroine being pretentious and clever on all fronts so far beyond her years. If this had been presented to me more as a a young adult novel, maybe I would have enjoyed it…

I struggled with the first few chapters, but once I got into the story, I was hooked. It is a satisfying mystery, and the detail, while sometimes cumbersome, is genius. I plan on reading his second book.

A lovely murder mystery set in England. Flavia de Luce is a charming young investigator and it's a delight to follow her adventures throughout the whole series.

Reminiscent of Nancy Drew and Sherlock Holmes, our heroine Flavia is both brilliant and endearing. The narrative is woven with so many details to build both the characters and the mystery. I genuinely thought a mystery involving an old…

Once I suspended my disbelief about Flavia's age because that was just ridiculous it was a fun mystery.

Eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce is understandably surprised to discover a dying man late one night in the garden of her family's English estate. When the investigators' suspicions come to rest on her own father as murderer, she resolves to…

I had heard about this book and had to wait a little before I could check it out, but it was definitely worth it. Flavia de Luce is an adorable character (well, her sisters would not agree, but still): she is (occasionally) compassionate,…

Flavia is at it again, solving a number of mysteries from the past and two murders. She is an ingenue, sometimes a pest and always as curious as a cat paddling her bike around her village gathering clues and besting inspector Hewitt to…
