The film was named the Best Foreign Film of 1960 by the National Board of Review. The story was about an Indian young man who could not further his education, instead he had to find a job to earn his living. As requested by his best friend, he accompanied him to attend a Wedding Ceremony, unfortunately it was found that the bridegroom was insane, to save the abandoned bride from public disgrace, he married her, thus he began his new life as husband and father.
The film is in black and white, it shows the Indian culture with subtitle in English.

Though I have brown skin, I don't speak any Indian languages and my parents and grandparents weren't from India.
I have had a hard time watching typical "Indian" movies, I just don't get the "Bollywood" thing.
This movie is amazing. It is artistically made and has a good story. There is NO singing and dancing in it, but it has a good backing soundtrack by Ravi Shankar.
This is one of my favourite "Indian" movies of all time, the other being "Salaam Bombay" by Mira Nair.
