This four-volume reference presents Latin America's past and present for middle and high school students. Tenenbaum (Mexican area specialist, Library of Congress) presents about 700 alphabetically arranged entries (illustrated with 200-plus b&w photographs and an eight-page color insert in each volume) focusing on people, places and themes. The format comprises a major column containing the text and a minor column with items such as definitions, time lines, and sidebars highlighting important or intriguing events, figures and facts. Biographies describe scores of heroes, leaders and saints, while other entries cover events, places, historical details, and cultural achievements of such artists as Diego Rivera and the music and dance associated with the samba, salsa, and tango. Finally, analytical articles enhance critical thinking skills by allowing students to investigate issues of wealth and poverty, war and peace, and ecological preservation. Annotation c.
