I absolutely love this movie, and Reese Witherspoon's performance. That being said, this is very taste-specific. Most of it is both awful and hilarious. There is also A LOT of violence. So if you don't like what I have described, you won't care for this movie. For those who do, it is a gem. It stars Reese Witherspoon, before she was famous, giving an incredible performance as a white-trash juvenile delinquent who is both hilarious AND also one of the bravest characters you will ever see on film.

I thought this one was a real stinker. Reese Witherspoon clearly needed money when she made this one.

This movie blew me away how intensely violent it was! I never expected this type of calibre from Reese Witherspoon, but I was impressed with her and Kiefer Sutherland both. Everything that happened though kept escalating. It was a weird, violent, adult, live-acted 90s version of "Little Red Riding Hood". What's more, you have really messed up characters and a story that won't let you go until the finale. Wow!

Watched this hard-to-find DVD years ago and still remember the graphic violence in this crime drama, and how shocked I was hearing the most foul curses coming out of the tiny teenager Witherspoon who was barely 20 in 1996, unimaginable against her sweet characters in "Legally Blonde" and "Sweet Home Alabama". From wiki, critics loved it for what it was - a slutty teen meets a sadistic serial killer:

The film was received positively by most critics, who lauded the film's hard-edged satire and performances. Film critic Roger Ebert gave Freeway three and a half stars out of four and stated, "like it or hate it (or both), you have to admire its skill, and the over-the-top virtuosity of Reese Witherspoon and Kiefer Sutherland." It received "Two Thumbs Up" on Siskel and Ebert At the Movies. Joe Baltake of The Sacramento Bee gave Freeway four stars out of four and called it "a wild, audacious drive-in attraction that takes the 'high' from 'highbrow' and the 'low' from 'lowdown' and shakes them up". Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle gave Freeway four stars out of four and said that it was "rude in the way the truth is rude—only funnier". Margaret A. McGurk wrote for the Cincinnati Enquirer that "I didn't particularly want to like Freeway, but I couldn't help myself. Reese Witherspoon made me."

Not what I expected.

Plenty in IMDb, e.g.:

Vanessa: When a guy does that and hurts someone who never hurt them, that makes him a criminal first and a sick guy second. It's like being sick has to take second place to being crooked. And Bob, you're crooked. You proved that to me tonight.
===
Rhonda: I don't get how a person could go through their whole lives never being into girls. I just... I love girls.
Vanessa: You can keep 'em.
===
Vanessa: He had this disease, called, um, Wisenheimers, I think. You know, where your brain cells run out into your pee.
===
Vanessa: So what you think it's OK do all sorts of bad stuff to me now?
Bob Wolverton: Well that's an open ended discussion Vanessa dealing with deep philosophical ramifications, something you can hardly grasp. In fact take it from me a professional Vanessa, you're an absolute fxcking moron!
