When amateur sleuth Francesca Wilson once again becomes involved with a murder mystery, she finds herself confronting repercussions for both herself and her husband as both cope with the issue of domestic violence and the temptation to have an affair.
William Price, under investigation for his fraudulent dealings in Spanish holiday condominiums, is found hanged, dressed in women's underwear. His is a very timely death, yielding an insurance bonanza for his second wife and his business partner, and preventing any more of his sons' inheritance from being squandered away.
Francesca Wilson may look like a competent "superwoman" to others, but truthfully her life is a wreck. Her baby is ill, so doesn't sleep; her policeman husband, John McLeish, has recently been promoted to chief detective superintendent, so is working longer hours; and to top it all off, she has to substitute for her flu-ridden mother at a women's refuge. There she meets batterer Dr. Anthony Price, the dead man's eldest son, and Matthew Sutherland, the refuge's temptingly handsome lawyer.
Francesca's husband is also facing temptation: His ex-lover Catherine has moved back to town to work in fraud, and their paths cross when John is placed in charge of the murder investigation.
