This famous work of historical fiction covers decades in the life of Katherine Swynford, the eventual Duchess of Lancaster. The historical Katherine is most famous for the people she was associated with, but here she is the main character. In this sprawling novel she is present for many historical events, including the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381 and the destruction of Savoy Palace. Numerous Kings and Queens make appearances in the novel, as do other historical figures such as writer Geoffrey Chaucer and Christian mystic Julian of Norwich.

I was first exposed to "Katherine" in my high school. Obviously, we all sighed and moaned and groaned when we were told it was a romance- who reads romance?

After? Even the boys admitted their affection for the book. While much of the novel is based only on a few dates and minimal records from the time, it remains an imaginative and engrossing telling of a real couple from the 14th and 15th centuries.

Katherine Swynford might not be a name you recognize, but John of Gaunt is the same John of Robin Hood infamy! (You'll end up liking this one a lot more!)

A well researched, highly readable historical novel. on Katherine Swynford mistress of John of Gaunt whose ancesters included Kings Henry IV, Henry V, and Henry VI. Better written than most romanticized historical novels. Factoid: John of Gaunt was one of the wealthiest men to have ever lived and was worth a modern equivalent of $110 billion, making him the sixteenth richest man in history (thanks Wikipedia).

Anya Seton remains one of the best historical fiction writers of all times. This novel brought Katherine to life. The details, the characters, the times all become a reality for the reader when reading a Seton book. Before the Tudors, there was the Plantagenets. Great read.

I definitely loved this book! It combines in-depth history of England with a gripping story of an unrequited love - what could be better? I highly recommend this to anyone interested in historical fiction.

This book was truly one of my favorite female historical novels. The author offers a wealth of research in this fast moving tale of a great love affair that has not been given much attention. She brings the characters and the period vividly to life.

One of my favourite books of all time. I even named my daughter Katherine after reading it countless times.
