Offered in 0 more formatsSan Francisco in Maps and Views explores the city's growth over the course of 400 years through a number of full-color illustrations. The history of San Francisco is a rich one marked by momentous events such as Spain's colonization of California, the Gold Rush of 1849, and the Great Earthquake of 1906. These turning points and many more are discussed in the detailed analysis of Bay Area resident and author, Sally Woodbridge.
These surveys, maps, and most recently, computer-drawn designs show how government, religion, and geography shaped San Francisco's urban fabric; they illustrate the development of the city's trolley and public transit systems and they hint at how San Francisco's population has evolved over time.
San Francisco is an "instant city" that sprang to life in a relatively short time. Woodridge, a Berkeley-based architectural historian, presents narrative to accompany 72 full-color maps and bird's-eye views of the city grouped by era (e.g., pre-Gold Rush, pre-1906 quake, postwar), which constitute a parallel survey of the science and art of cartography. Illustrations range from a lithograph of the city in 1846, when its name was changed from Yerba Buena, to a current home buyer's reference map and computer-aided perspective of the downtown. The volume includes background information on the map and view makers. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
San Francisco in Maps documents the evolution of this fascinating and beautiful city through 72 breathtaking antiquarian maps, spanning four centuries. The gorgeous maps, many of them hand colored and rarely seen, bring alive the history of this vibrant city. These maps range from the early days when they served to aid ship navigation of this unfamiliar and frequently foggy harbor; to the gold rush era in the mid-1800s, when the city's population grew exponentially and it saw the beginnings of neighborhoods like Chinatown, many of which persist to today; to the period before and after the great earthquake of 1906, which destroyed 80 percent of the city, and from out of which modern San Francisco emerged.
