Most people came to the Song of Ice and Fire series by watching the Game of Thrones on HBO. That series is 1% George RR Martin and 99% HBO. I have the entire series in paperback and hardcover and was bored to tears reading them. I thought listening to the audio CDs would be better, but it was even worse. Martin spends a ridiculous amount of time describing the most mundane of things that add nothing to the plot. It should not take 23 pages to describe a place (the veil) or forty pages to describe an event that takes 2 minutes in the show. Granted the show was taken from the novels but they were selective. No one would want to make a series of Martin's entire novels. They're just too tedious. To put it in perspective, compare this to Harry Potter. Everyone makes fun of the ridiculous length of Goblet of Fire. That's half the size of this one. Puts it in perspective, doesn't it? The narrator is well-chosen, but the material is slooooooow. Like watching air move across a room. :0 A better name for this would be 28 discs of long conversations of old men.

I had high hopes for this book as included on several best science fiction lists OF ALL TIME. What a monumental disappointment! I listened through 10 disks and have given up; this is one of the most boring, tedious, and repetitive books I have ever read. In an instant, I would reread every series book in the ; "Lord of the Rings"; "Ender"; "Three Body Problem"; or "Dune" series" 35 times before trying "Game of Thrones" again.

Great fantasy reading!

Trust me, the land of Westeros will captivate you after this book and you will root for most of the characters!

Martin is a master of his genre!

Long, but well worth listening to. If you have watched the show, you will find it has stayed true to the book for the most part.

I read this after watching the HBO series and thoroughly enjoyed the first of seven. Outstanding writing. Onto the Clash of Kings. 10 of 10 stars

Dramatic and thrilling, this book is brimming with lively characters, as flawed and human as any man! Well written and unpredictable, the story had me excitedly guessing, almost from the start!

I read this first volume and have not completed reading the second volume. However I am actively following the mini series and was shocked by some of the developements.
In reading the book I find that some of the main characters are very young to be entrusted with such great responsibility and leadership.
