I've always recommended Laurie Halse Anderson to teens interested in a solid historical fiction read with a bit of mystery and intrigue, and this book is no exception. Isabel is a strong female protagonist who a lot of teens might relate to when it comes to taking risks while still holding strong to their moral compass. Very well developed characters and vivid historical descriptions. The cliffhanger ending will definitely leave you wanting to read Forge, the sequel.

"Chains" was a fast-paced, riveting historical fiction novel that blew me away with its emotion and views of war, slavery, and overcoming obstacles when the odds are completely against you. I was inspired to say the least!

I frequently pull this book off the shelf for a teen looking for historical fiction. I think it is an eye opener to help teens search out this subject on their own but it is written in a way that won't scare a young reader away.

Chains was a really good book! I liked the fact that it told the readers a lot about what was happening in the Revolutionary war and the different perspectives from different people including the main character Isabel, a slave who only wants to be freed. I definitely would recommend this book.

" The best time to talk to ghosts is just before the sun comes up.That's when they can hear us true, Momma said. That's when ghosts can answer us.
The eastern sky was peach colored, but
a handful of lazy stars still blinked in the west. It was almost time. "
