Detective Inspector Christy Kennedy investigates the murder of former colleague, retired Superintendent Davdi Peters who died at a Guy Fawkes bonfire at London's Primrose Hill. On a wintry Saturday night a large crowd has gathered on Primrose Hill for the annual Halloween bonfire and firework display. Panic spreads as quickly as the fire's flames when a human body is spotted in the middle of the fire's glowing timbers. The following morning pathologist Dr Leonard Taylor, while examining the charred remains, recognises from the distinctive rows of gold fillings that the victim is retired police Superintendent David Peters, an ex-colleague of DI Christy Kennedy. As Kennedy and his team settle down to a painstaking search through Peters' cases they soon discover that for the superintendent the means justified the end when it came to solving them. Each case they review throws up another suspect, and that's before Kennedy overhears singer Ginger Buchanan being very indiscreet backstage at Camden Town's famous Jazz Cafe.
