Whoa. Note to literary curators and other acolytes: do not deny Anne C. Heller access to source documents. She will cut you. Ayn Rand and the World She Made is brutally honest, but it is the brutality of the stiletto, rather than the broadsword. Ms. Rand herself would probably have liked this biography, because it is stringently objective, and gives credit to Ms. Rand for her climb to success. And what a climb it was: from a woman, a Jew, and a dispossessed bourgeoise in Soviet Russia (three categories Ms. Rand would not have chosen for herself) to a secular saint in Manhattan. Sure, she stepped on a few faces and found a few unlikely allies along the way -- the American Right, for one. But she had big ideas, in which she earnestly believed. And she bucked the literary trends of her time, mostly to do with books having to be, at least, well-written. What do we, in the 21st century, not owe her?

I have never been able to slog my way through a single book of the woman herself but this biography gives insight to Ms. Rand's life, philosophy and her specific influence on cultural norms. Greenspan was a fan so her influence is possibly visisble in current financial fiasco
