Paranoramlcy is a flirtatious ride that will have readers wanting more and more until there is nothing to give. Evie believes she lives a normal life while working for a secret government agency filled with supernatural creatures. Sadly, problem arises and the paranormal are dying in mysterious ways. So made Evie’s life is not as normal as she liked to believe it is. It’s plot has no holes. Its just right and moves at a steady pace with the right amount of detailing. Paranormalcy is everything a great book could hope for, sassy, suspenseful and scary. On top of being a great story it is a short story. It’s a book everyone can fall in love with. - @LittleMissRedHead of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

Paranormalcy by Kiersten White

I have to say, in a time when vampire novels are getting old, this was a refreshing new twist to paranormal books! Evie works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, bagging and tagging paranormals around the world to keep them under control and out of harm’s way. Her parents didn’t want her, and she spent time in foster care bouncing from house to house before the IPCA picked her up. She was taken in by the agency because she can see through a paranormal’s glamour. That is, she can see past a vampire’s normal looking skin to see the rotting flesh beneath, or the yellow eyes of a werewolf beneath bright blue. Her ex-boyfriend is an annoying faerie who wants her back and the new boy in her world is something no one knows how to classify. In fact, she was the one who bagged and tagged him when he was caught breaking in. But why was he breaking in? And what’s up with the abnormally high rate of paranormal deaths in the world? Strange things start to happen, making Evie question who she is herself and whether or not she can save those she loves from death and even herself. Is she really as human as she thought she was?

This is a MUST READ for anyone interested in paranormal activity. Evie has great wit and humor, loves great television, and yearns to see what a real school locker looks like since she’s never been to high school, never mind a real prom. What more could you want from a book? The romance is thoroughly believable and beautiful, and you won’t be able to put the book down once you pick it up. A kickass story with a little romance. Definitely a good combination.

Paranormalcy is the first in the YA series by the same name which was written by Kiersten White and first published by HarperTeen in August 2010.
For as long as Evie can remember she has been working at the International Paranormal Containment Agency (IPCA) because only she can see through paranormal glamours. She has always thought of herself as a normal teenager with a passion for online shopping and high school dramas on TV, but she is about to realize that there is something sinister going on with her at the epicenter. Something or someone is killing paranormals and she is going to help find out what is going on so that they can stop this from happening. So much for being normal.
Unfortunately this book has been sitting on my bookshelf for a while. The entire series has already been released and I am only just reading the first book now. I must say that I was drawn to this book because of the cover it is dark yet beautiful. I like the contrast between Evie looking beautiful and pale in front of the dark and stormy looking sky. I have heard lots of positive reviews of the series, and since it fits well with the (not so) scary theme of the month I was excited to finally start this series. I listened to the audiobook and I think the actress did a fantastic job especially with Lish and the many voices of Lend, so if you get a chance you should check it out.
I went into the book not really knowing what it was about, but it sucks you in from the very beginning and it’s a quick read that makes you want to keep reading right through to the end. The main character is Evie who has the unique ability to see through glamours revealing the true form of monsters like vampires, werewolves and faeries. She is taken in by the IPCA to work for them and help them contain paranormals. Evie was a typical teenager worried about fashion, shopping and boys. I like that she was excited about normal things like lockers, high school and obtaining a drivers license. She yearns for the lifestyle that every teenager has and takes for granted. I found myself identifying with her girly yet tough personality. If I was going to own a deadly weapon of course I would want it to be in pink too!
There were some really interesting personalities in this book including Lish Evie’s best friend who happens to be a mermaid, Lend her dreamy crush who can take any form, the creepy faery Reth who was scarily obsessed with Evie, and a ‘villain’ who tries to get Evie to use her powers for evil. I loved reading about the interaction with each character because nothing felt unnatural or forced especially the budding relationship with Lend.
I liked the story, and found myself cheering for Evie and wanting to find out more about her. I like the inside joke between Evie and Lish that the robotic voice Lish has did not translate swear words and so throughout the book they say “bleep” instead of swears. I think it gets your point across without having to say inappropriate words.
I will definitely be reading the next book in the series which is called Supernaturally and was originally released in 2011. I want to see what happens next with Evie and Lend. The film rights were optioned prior to the release of the first book, but no definitive plans for a movie have been released. I think it would work well as a tv show, and I would watch it for sure.

I was extremely excited when I saw this book in a library book sale for $1 and I picked it up right away. I finished it in about 2 days. It was literally AMAZING! So much action and romance, and the characters were extremely likable. The plot was interesting and never had a dull moment and the romance was freaking fantastic. I was like, "aww, they're so cute. <3" Lol, it's really great guys! Give it a try and you'll see!

This bokk was amazing, when Evie cried I cried, when she laughed I laughed and I smiled and laughed all throughout the book (when appropriate). I can relate to the story and I understood all her choices and how she didn't give in to the bad thing she wanted at the end. She chose to be good even when she was pressured to be bad and told that she was meant (made) to be that way. I highly commend Kiersten White for how well she wrote this story, it was beautifully created and I didn't want the book to end. Hopefully Kiersten decideds this book should be an ongoing series, because I swear I will read every last copy.

This book is a lot of fun to read! The title is appropriate considering Evie lives in a paranormal environment, while trying to be a 'normal' teenager. But what is 'normal' anyway? Try it, you'll like it.

I've had this book on my For Later shelf for a long time, but I'm glad that I finally got around to reading it. I really like Evie's character, and how spunky, tough, and somehow normal and relateable she is. I actually really liked all the characters, and I applaud the author for having such relateable, well-developed characters. The story was interesting and kept me entertained, and I was never quite sure what would happen next. For some reason, this book did remind me of the Maximum Ride series (which I haven't read in forever!), probably because Evie and Max are quite similar, and the whole goverment-paranormal-coverup thing. I did like this book, but I think I would have enjoyed it more if it hadn't taken me almost a week to finish (I was just busy, I guess), but that's always a factor in how much I enjoy a book. Overall, I would recommend this book if you're looking for a paranormal story with a twist.

“Yes, I have a driver's license."

I leaned back against the wall, sighing. "Man, that must be so cool."

"It ranks right up there with lockers. In fact, sometimes I put my license inside my locker, and it's so cool I worry that the whole thing might explode with the sheer coolness of it all.”
