Moving beyond lycra: the latest trends in street style and the return to style on wheels.
The efficiency of getting around by bike has made cycling a popular pursuit of city life. More recently, biking and street style have come together to form an entire spectrum of urban self-expression. From gritty messengers to tweed-sporting bankers, from Pashley princesses to high-tech roadies, cycle chic is everywhere you look. This colorful compendium offers snapshots from around the world of everyday riders who are redefining bike fashion and emphasizing the accessibility—and fun—of city cycling. Targeted at the style-conscious of all stripes, this ingenious collection presents charismatic combinations of individual style and practical function.

Book News
Examining the sometimes quirky fashions of cyclists in urban settings around the world, fashion blogger and cycling enthusiast Colville-Anderson brings together snapshots of everyday bicycle riders and their style considerations in terms of both personal expression and functionality. Consisting primarily of photos, this compendium offers very little text, but organizes the collection by a series of common traits observed and offers a form over function manifesto of the author's concept of cycle chic. Great concept, although really the simple idea that you can ride your bike in your normal fashionable daily clothes, as opposed to spandex gear plastered with adverts (I call those types "furottes", from a similar looking character in a show called Les Oraliens in my childhood), is nothing new in most of the world. The idea and this book has much merit in a place like Ottawa where cycling is often more seen as a sport for aggressive males than a convenient mean for anyone to get around the city. Still, the author, who has an influential blog on the theme, is not a particularly skilled photographer, so a diversity of collaborators would have made this book a lot more appealing. In the age of flickr, our photographic expectations have gone up!
