The Buffy series moves into a new phase with this first arc in the "Season Nine" notion. Buffy and company are living in San Francisco, making ends meet, with much of the magic in the world cut off by events in the previous volume. Buffy has to deal with the consequences of that, of being the only Slayer still powered up, meeting someone who's not quite what they seem in the process. Characterization and pacing is still as smooth as ever.
