When shy, artistic Anna moves to the seaside to live with her aunt and uncle, she stumbles upon an old mansion surrounded by marshes, and the mysterious young girl, Marnie, who lives there. The two girls instantly form a unique connection and friendship that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality. As the days go by, a nearly magnetic pull draws Anna back to the Marsh house again and again, and she begins to piece together the truth surrounding her strange new friend.

A ghost story that's heartwarming, and a little sentimental, rather than frightening (though at least one member of my family found it creepy).

A beautifully written celebration of the female bond, the strength of a grandmother's love from beyond the grave, and the resilient spirit of a foster child. Yes you will cry as the story unfolds but it will warm your heart by the end.

This was ok, I found the last part of the film to be a let down. Not as good as Hayao Miyazaki's best films.

This is a beautiful film about friendship and how those friendships can help us grow. When Marnie Was There is fantastic and should be seen at least once in a lifetime. This is the first Ghibli film that does not have the talent of Hayao Miyazaki behind it, and it is still fantastic. The film does tend to be a bit too 'mysterious' at times. Great family entertainment that adult's can enjoy, maybe even moreso than children.

So much more than I thought it would be. The trailers never really captivated me too much, and I dragged my feet to see it. But I finally did. And wow. When Marnie Was There has such a quiet, unassuming power and warmth. The powerful lessons of friendship and forgiveness are so potent here. Anna herself is a character the epitome of a growing girl. She's such a realatable character, a girl who doesn't know her own worth and strength. She's lonely and quiet and doesn't fit in, and so many people can relate to that. It's so sad, but her journey as a person is tremendous over the course of the movie. Marnie was an intriguing character. Just like Anna, we see her as a strange but endearing, friendly girl. The whole plot of the movie kept me guessing throughout, trying to figure out who the hay Marnie even was. So I was intrigued and mystified.
A wonderful Ghibli movie with its own magical qualities. Definitely worth a watch, especially if you already love Studio Ghibli.
