This sweet book is reminiscent of Bartoletti's The Christmas Promise. The poignant story subtly depicts the tremendous sacrifices families in China are making to earn a living wage. Special holidays like the Lunar New Year draw faraway family members back home to reconnect with their loved ones. It is a modern Lunar New Year story that stands above and apart from other books on this topic.

Young Maomao's papa works far from home and only gets to visit his family on special occasions, like Chinese New Year. This sweet, touching story, brightly illustrated in a folk-art style, follows the family's activities during Papa's visit - from making sticky rice balls (one with a lucky coin hidden inside) to making household repairs to watching from their rooftop as dragon dancers parade through the streets. From Papa's arrival through his departure, it's a warm family tale that is "sensitive, restrained - but festive too" (Kirkus Reviews).
