The Village is a timeless coming-of-age story, told through the nostalgic eyes of one man, Bert Middleton. From lustful first-love and the dramas of war, to a father's hard lessons and a mother's love; Bert has seen it all. The Great War is over but what kind of England has won? Now in a world of boom and bust, motor cars and the Charleston, the twenties bring a blast of energy and freedom to the village; as the outside world continues to break down barriers, bringing with it big dramas and change.

Happier times in Season 2, not as gloomy!

I though it very well done, the families were well portrayed. The introduction of the Labour movement into the village, the fight for retention of power by the higher class conservatives, the middle class with their desire to move up in society, make for interesting drama.

Explicitly preachy in parts, this series is nevertheless a welcome antidote to the everybody-happy-in-his-place world of Downton Abbey (with Jullian Fellowes' increasingly pointless scripts). In 'The Village' Peter Moffat has created a more realistic 'us-and-them' view of life in the shires at at time when the English class system is starting to lose its immutable look. The focus is on the labours and loves of the plain people of a Derbyshire farming village who are no longer ready to tug their forelocks to the decadent (and thuggish) gentry in the Big House. Good acting, of course, with a script that at least is headed in the right direction. Let's hope the BBC keeps this series going for many seasons to come.
