Slums in Love Song, 1974:
There were three slums in Tokyo at the time: Shinami in Shiba, Mannencho in Shit and Samegabashi here in Yotsuya. The residents did various things: There were day laborers,
rickshawmen, stable boys, ragpickers, and criminals of every sort. Left behind by changing times
and the prosperity of victory, the dregs of society lived here as they pleased. There was no end
to their poverty and humiliation, yet they lived with stubborn pride and brash audacity. While many drifters found their way to this slum, the police rarely ventured inside this sort of extraterritorial zone.

As I slogged through the wastelands of Manchuria, gun on my shoulder, you were the only thing
that kept me going. The thought you'd be waiting when I came back home. I refused to die before I made it home. I couldn't. Those thoughts kept me alive, and I made it back.

Love Song of Vengeance backdrop, 1974:
They defeat injustice in heaven's name. Our soldiers, brave and loyal without peer. Sent off with our cheers. They depart the fatherland bravely vowing, not to return alive unless victorious. At home you are men of accomplishment. Abroad you are warriors, loyal and brave. In September of Meiji 38 (1905), the Russo-Japanese War came to an end. The dead and wounded numbered 370,000. It was a gruesome victory, but it established a firm foundation for the empire's capitalist system. Nonetheless, postwar inflation was severe and the voiceless people quietly nursed a pent-up rage. In those days there was a woman wandering aloof from it all, fixated on her journey of vengeance.

An eye for an eye! Snow falls like a funeral for the dead morning. Stray dogs howl in the distance.
As she walks, the sound of her 'geta' piercing the air, she walks on, weighed down by karma, her bull's-eye umbrella embracing the darkness, the woman who walks this path in life gave up her tears Long ago.

The legend, 1973:
Vengeance Binds Love and Hate. Over 20 years have passed. European ideas of social progress
that once greatly unsettled the people are becoming widely accepted. Still, provincial disputes
continue unabated, as do unfair practices by mercenary plutocrats and businessmen, and actions taken by corrupt officials seeking only to benefit themselves. Self-indulgent, rich men and women
grow in number, while the pleas of poor peasants remained unanswered. At this time, there lived a woman of the netherworld. Everyone knew of her flowery beauty, burned a raging desire to hunt down her enemies. People say, what cleanses this world of decay is not pure white snow, but the stained fiery-red snow of the netherworld.

You were born for vengeance, poor child. But, Yuki... you must avenge us without fail. Your father,
your elder brother...and me.

Wondering where Tarantino got the idea for Kill Bill? Look no further. Lady Snowblood, or Shurayuki-hime, tells story of revenge in Meiji Period Japan, a time when women had little to no rights. This was also a time when Japan was shifting from a feudal society into a more modern one. One of my favorite movies of all time!

Not for the faint of heart, but this is a gorgeous set of films. The first movie is beautiful. Like, yes, aesthetically gorgeous and very clearly of its time, but also the story is so, SO great and told so well. I love Yuki, and Meiko Kaji’s acting was spine tinglingly good. It’s gory, but as someone easily squicked by realistic violence the 70s aesthetic helped there. It’s a multi-generational revenge story, a love story, a weirdly graceful swashbuckler, and also sad and absurd and deeply satisfying. Highly recommend!

Double feature of the sword wielding female Manga assassin "Lady Snowblood" saga released in 1973 and 1974. Not for most viewers but those who enjoy Japanese Manga characters, invincible swordsman as the "Zatoichi" movies, "どろろ [videorecording] - Dororo," "Blood, The Last Vampire" etc.

Not bad. The second story Lady Snow Blood: love song of vengeance is better. Very bloody but the blood looks way too fake.
