Read the book first. The movie was great!

Curmudgeonly cranky Ove is obsessed with keeping his neighborhood tidy and ordered. That goes for his life, too. No new people, no diversions from routine, or any other untidy and unpredictable possibilities allowed. Humorous and heartfelt, this film is all about the things that make life worth living and all the many things that are so very hard to bear.

Very cute movie about a grumpy old man who has flashbacks about the loss of his wife. He monitors the housing development where he lives and usually deals with most people by calling them idiots, but so many people in his neighborhood need help – the new family across the street with an immigrant mother and young children, his old former friend who is now incapacitated, to the local homeless cat. Old Ove was raised to always do what is right and he still believes and practices that objective. The DVD it is a touching story, beautifully acted and very funny. Based on a best-selling novel which I now need to read.

Both the book and the movie were wonderful, even though much of the book was necessarily left out of the movie. The book is able to more gradually and subtly unfold the story. I was glad I'd read it first, so the movie became a delightful enactment of the main plot.

Take the words of my fellow KCLS patrons who praised "The Story of Ove". No movie in recent times has moved me like "Ove". You must be patient and let the entire story open up. The film is like watching a movie within a movie. So wait and meet the entire cast and story. You will be richly rewarded!! If I could I would deliver this film to your house. I want you all to see it!

I think he was too blind given what he'd been through. That he couldn't be sensitive to the suffering of others seemed unlikely given his own pain. Also, I thought the ending was a bit of a cop out; it occurred too soon. I'm being oblique so as not to spoil the story for those who haven't seen it yet.
I loved that the second most important role in the film was a young woman from Iran. Good for Americans to see.

I loved the book, and have been looking forward to seeing the movie. This movie captures the spirit of the book and is beautifully cast. As usual, the book is more detailed and complex, and I do recommend reading the book before seeing the movie. They are both 5 stars.
