DSS Mike Shepherd and DC Kristin Simms return to uncover more macabre goings on in the quaint, murder-ridden town of Brokenwood. Beneath the town's peaceful veneer are buried secrets, treacherous lies, and murderous rivalries.
Black widower : The Frog and Cheetah publican, Ray Neilson, has branched into tourism with his 'Lord of the Ringz Tours.' But when Ray's wife is discovered dead under a giant foam spider, things get murky. But when the cause of death is revealed to be from New Zealand's only native venomous spider - the Katipo - the question becomes how did one spider administer ten times the lethal dose?
Over Her Dead Body: Brokenwood is in mourning at the passing of local poet Declan O'Grady. But things go from sad and bad to worse when his coffin accidentally falls from the hearse revealing that the corpse inside is not Declan but a young woman identifiable only be a notable scarlet tattoo.
Killing Machine: Charlie Baxter, Chairman of the Classic Car Restoration Society, is found dead next to his beloved El Dorado with a lungful of gasoline. Was this a petrol siphoning accident or something more deliberate? And does his death have anything to do with the unidentified body found in Charlie's garage the day before?
Merry Bloody Christmas: Mike and his team find Santa Claus with his throat slit. Santa turns out to be the much-loved local Mayor. With elections looming, Mike's team turn their attentions towards the former Mayor's rivals.

Brokenwood gets more boring the more I watch. I just watched part of the first disk and that will be all of this series I will waste my time on. The country western music is unpleasant to listen to and the plot is weak and silly, the characters are ridiculous!

Each season gets better. I really like Jared can't figure out how come he doesn't have a girl friend yet.The comedy is coming along as well. Looking forward to the fourth one.

Best season so far imho! Shepherd and Sims are now solving crimes like a well-oiled machine. There's a down-home feel to these episodes, and I'm finding the supporting ensemble provides great comedic effect. There's a DS with phobias to exploit; Russian medical examiner with a romantic interest in Mike Shepherd; a young Maori, who seems to have insights into most every crime, and even plays two different characters in the final episode; and a busybody who seems to show up daily with her own theory of whodunit! Just the right mix of drama and comedy, and never taking itself too seriously, makes this series a keeper!

I really liked the first series, the locale was different and the characters interesting, especially Jared, Mike, and Gina. Some great dialog. But, in my opinion, it has been going downhill. The plots are now in "Midsomer Murders" territory, and it suffers from the same problem - how many murders can you have in a small town? The interactions of the characters now seem phoney and unnecessarily cute I wouldn't watch a fourth series.

I am enjoying the Brokenwood series - about cops in a small New Zealand town. Series 3 has progressed, the murders are a bit more complex. The main characters are more fleshed out and reoccurring characters appear (likely for a small town setting). No emphasis on the main detective's multiple marriages (thought that story line was a bit dull.) They focus on the New Zealand setting, the first episode has a crime that happened on a Lord of the Rings tour setting, another episode has a murder taking place during Christmas (which of course in summer in NZ). Another episode had deadly spiders and sharks. Overall, good fun and getting a bit more kooky with oddball characters. One episode involves a murder during the local classic car show - lots of Mustangs, Thunderbirds, etc. One character only collects Fords (no GMs) - fun to see an American influence. I catch myself trying to see if the steering wheel is on the left or right! Usually has some Maori characters in the story. Think they are currently filming Series 4. Not mind-boggling deep detective mysteries, but a fun setting the in NZ with lovely scenery. Good to see NZ police officers carrying guns (watched a British detective series - no one carried a gun!) No swearing or sex, the murders are a bit bloody , but the local coroner is a regular character so all part of the storyline.
