Baker & Taylor
A Parisian architect is paid handsomely to devise secret hiding spaces for Jews in his Nazi-occupied country but struggles with risking his life for a cause he is ambivalent towards, until a personal failure brings home their suffering.

Random House Digital
Like most gentiles in Nazi-occupied Paris, architect Lucien Bernard has little empathy for the Jews. So when a wealthy industrialist offers him a large sum of money to devise secret hiding places for Jews, Lucien struggles with the choice of risking his life for a cause he doesn't really believe in. Ultimately he can't resist the challenge and begins designing expertly concealed hiding spaces--behind a painting, within a column, or inside a drainpipe--detecting possibilities invisible to the average eye. But when one of his clever hiding spaces fails horribly and the immense suffering of Jews becomes incredibly personal, he can no longer deny reality.Written by an expert whose knowledge imbues every word, this story becomes more gripping with every life the architect tries to save.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book!! The reading was great and the story line put me on the edge of my seat. There are aspects of the war I hadn't thought about. If you haven't listened to the Nightingale, please do. It is very good.

I enjoyed the story very much but did not enjoy the explicit language throughout.

Loved this - the reader did very well with the accents (French and German) and painted a great picture of war-time Paris.

This is the first audiobook I've heard which reminded me of an unexpectedly enjoyable eating experience. Specifically a sweet, juicy peach. I checked this out on a whim because I like architecture. I didn't expect to like the writing, characters, narrator's voice/accents and enlightening historical context as much as I did. It's strange but it reminded me of eating a peach. Not my favorite fruit but when you're pleasantly surprised by a really good one it makes it that much more enjoyable. I highly recommend this book.

An evenly paced "read" with some scenes that keep you on the edge of your seat. Mark's accents get a bit blurred between the French and the German and the women and indistinguishable but all-in-all, an enjoyable book.
