You've played the game. Now read the legend of how it all began...Long ago, in an ancient and distant realm called the Kingdom of Backyard, there lived a warrior named ROCK. Meanwhile in the Empire of Mom's Home Office, a second great warrior sought the glory of battle. And his name was PAPER. At the same time, in the Kitchen Realm, in the tiny village of Junk Drawer, lived a third warrior. They called her SCISSORS. These three were the strongest, smartest, and fastest in all the land. Time and again they beat the most fearsome opponents they could find: an apricot, a computer printer--even frozen, breaded, dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets! But when the warriors finally meet each other, the most epic round of battles begins...and never ends. That is why, to this day, children around the world honor these worthy adversaries by playing ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS!--Provided by Publisher.

A silly book on how we have come to play Rock, Paper, Scissors. The illustrations are a great addition to this story. This book is definitely a fun read-a-loud for the whole family.

This book is hilarious. I'm an adult, and I still loved it. The language might be a little lofty at times, and the full scope of the humor might be lost on really young readers ("Bow before our child-pleasing shapes and flavors, sword master!" the dinosaur chicken nuggets say to Scissors at one point), but slightly older children should get plenty of chuckles out of this "legendary" origin story.

This story begs to be read aloud complete with sports announcer style voicework. Kids will love the epic battle sequences leading up to the ultimate showdown.

This is book will actually have you reading with such enthusiasm. My nephew loved it so, that I actually had to go and buy the book for him. You will be "victorious" just like rock, paper and scissors.

Drew Daywalt writes a hilarious and dramatic tale of how the great legends rock, paper, and scissors came to meet and, of course, battle in the cavern of Two-Car Garage. Rock hails from the Kingdom of Backyard, Paper’s territory is the Empire of Mom’s Home Office, and Scissors resides in the Kitchen Realm. Rock, paper, and scissors are each invincible in their respective kingdoms—smooshing Apricot, jamming the Computer Printer, battling Dinosaur-Shaped Chicken Nuggets—and must leave their realms to find worthy opponents! Rex’s illustrations perfectly express the outrageous drama of Daywalt’s narrative. This book will appeal to children of all ages!

The story opens in “The Kingdom of Backyard,” where the great warrior Rock is unsatisfied with his conquests; there are no opponents who present enough of a challenge for him. In other distant lands (“Empire of Mom’s Home Office” and “Ream of Kitchen”) Scissors and Paper are facing similar problems. All three venture to “The Great Cavern of Two-Car Garage” in search of worthy challengers. When they meet, an epic three-way battle begins, one that is still going on today. (Don’t worry, no one gets hurt.) The text is laugh-out-loud funny, and the illustrations are mesmerizing.
