This movie stayed with me long after viewing. My conclusion is that the theme, plot, and ending consistently hold up. They movie was creatively told -- a movie within a movie.

*SPOILER ALERT* Don't read if you haven't watched the movie yet.

You can likely interpret this movie a few ways, but the symbolism of the novel story played out like this: Susan and Edward got together young, Susan didn't listen to her mother that she would eventually become her mother, and the the relationship wouldn't end well.

And, that's how it played out. Susan behaved badly -- she wanted Edward to let go of his dreams and when he didn't, she crushed him. Twenty years later, her life is empty, she's in a lonely relationship with her second husband, and now she wants to reignite things w/ Edward who she broke up with b/c she thought him weak. He never got over it and this is his revenge novel.

Nocturnal Animals is a study in taking the path you thought you wanted until you realize that you are only left with the outward appearance of a good life while internally, there is misery. I like that we only see Edward in flashbacks.

A lot of negative press in the comments on this one but I'm impressed by the simplicity of the story and how compelling I found it. It feels like a revenge story and seeing the other side of karma.

Good acting but found the story and a couple of the characters somewhat unrealistic as the sheriff too odd and father of raped wife and daughter too uninspired and spineless to be able to believe it would unfold that way. I too found that RAY character was well done by the same actor that was in KICK-ASS!

A dark, dreary, unhappy R-rated version of "The Never Ending Story"! That's all it really was.

Tom Ford is a gay fashion designer who, as of late, speaks with a British accent and his left leaning politics serves up this dinner scene dialogue with Amy Adams who says, "Well you know my parents, right? They're religious, conservative, sexist, racist, Republican, materialistic, narcissistic, racist..", okay, you get the idea. There are many terrifying moments in the movie—Aaron Taylor-Johnson is terrific as the bad guy—and Michael Shannon delivers another solid performance as the sheriff. I thought the ending was a little puzzling and weak. I had to google the ending to see if I had interpreted it correctly. A good, scary thriller (not PG-13 material.)

A disturbing start, decent storyline or -lines, open ended (maybe) end. Crime and punishment on parallel levels?

What a disappointment. I was expecting a sexy thriller with Amy and Jake and instead I got a silly story that we have seen before involving nice people who meet rednecks on a dark country road. The opening credits and the toilet scene were gross and pointless. I like Ford a lot less after seeing this mess.

LOVED this movie!!! anything with Jake Gyllenhall is usually good, but this was outstanding. Michael Shannon, etc...great cast and great story and the ending kicked butt. :)

I thought this movie was really good all the way. But, the ending totally sucked. I did not like the way it ended. Bummer!

It's a well-produced, but disturbingly violent and cynical revenge movie. Its heavy metaphors serve up a depressing art movie that leaves me feeling as empty as Amy Adams character.

Dark drama with good character performances. Appears that the movie was made for the artistic fulfillment of the director, not for the audience. Strange plot with lots of questions.

- No, we're not perfect for each other, Edward. We may be perfect for each other if we didn't live in the real world, but I live in the real world and I need a life that is more structured. I need a future that is more structured.
Hey.
-I want to be the person that you want me to be, but I just can't.
You are. You are.
- I can't be that.
Hey, no, stop.
-I, I really wanted to be this person that you thought I was, I really did, but I'm just not that person. I'm, I'm cynical, I'm pragmatic.
No, look...
-No, I am. I'm a realist.
You're afraid. You're afraid.
-No, I'm not afraid.
We've been through this so many times before.
- I'm not scared. I'm not scared. I'm unhappy. All right. I'm just really, really unhappy. You're so... You really are so wonderful and you're just so sensitive and romantic and...
Weak. That's right, yeah.
- What? I did not say you were weak.
You've said it so many times before.
- I did not call you weak.
You've said it before, so why don't you say it again? Weak.

Susan, keep seeing him if you have to, live with him, I don't care, but do not marry him. I understand what you see in Edward. I get it. ... He is a romantic. But he is also very fragile. I saw that when his father died. Don't... Don't do this. You'll regret it. And you'll only hurt Edward in the end. The things you love about him now are the things you'll hate in a few years. You may not realize it, but you and I are a lot more alike than you think.
- No. You're wrong. You and I are nothing alike.
Really? Just wait. We all eventually turn into our mothers.
===
Well, when you love someone, you work it out. You don't just throw it away. You have to be careful with it. You might never get it again.
-I can't do this with you anymore, Edward. I just can't keep doing this.
Susan... You can't just walk away from things all the time.

My ex-husband used to call me a nocturnal animal.
===

Why are you so driven to write?
-I guess it's a way of keeping things alive. You know, saving things that will eventually die. And if I write it down, then, it'll last forever.
===

You sound like your mother.
-Well, you always said that I reminded you so much of her, so... You know, this is exactly why I don't wanna read your work because you always get so fxcking defensive.
Yeah, of course I'm defensive! Do you know what it feels like to put yourself out on the line creatively and then have someone you love tell you that they don't understand it?
-No, I don't, because I'm not creative...
That's because you choose not to be.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: A rape of a teenage girl is shown briefly. The violence is very realistic and unnerving.
