Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood--also known as the Late Show--beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns everything over to the day shift. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two assignments she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn. Against orders and her partner's wishes, she works both cases by day while maintaining her shift by night. As the investigations entwine, they pull her closer to her own demons and the reason she won't give up her job, no matter what the department throws at her.

Pure Connelly - - sweet perfection! Once again he captures the cop novel perfectly, and of the lone fighter against the infuriating organization out to get her, in this case. Excellent new character with an interesting profile.

This is a great start to a new character, Renee Ballard, from Michael Connelly. She exhibits some of the same stubborn independence, take no prisoners attitude, and "blue religion" characteristics as Harry Bosch so I expect more great stories as Renee finds her way within the LAPD.

not as good as BOSCH

Looks like Connelly has found his 'new' Bosch. Slower start, mostly spent character building and then an accelerating plot with a satisfying climax. Credible, real and entertaining.

Was waiting with great anticipation the arrival of Connelly's latest character and she did not disappoint. Great story, good character development and a noted reference to "Bosch"!
Looking forward to more Renee Ballard!

Very disappointed in the profanity. Not necessary at all. I'm done with Connelly.

Terrific new character. A real page turner. Can't wait for the next one in what is sure to be a long running character.
