First there was an opportunity; then there was a betrayal. Twenty years have gone by. Much has changed but just as much remains the same. Mark Renton returns to the only place he can ever call home. They are waiting for him: Spud, Sick Boy, and Begbie. Other old friends are waiting too: sorrow, loss, joy, vengeance, hatred, friendship, love, longing, fear, regret, diamorphine, self-destruction and mortal danger, they are all lined up to welcome him, ready to join the dance.

The first film was original, innovative, and thought-provoking. But I liked the sequel even better. The performances in T2 from the original cast were terrific. And I ;loved how the director effortlessly moved the story along, It's both funny and sad I loved it.

With the exception of one rather funny scene in a pub, this movie was absolute garbage.

If you were to casually mention you didn't like the original Trainspotting for whatever reason, on my worst days, I would sit you down and gently remind you of all the reason why you are wrong. I have a distinct distaste for sequels, especially garbage sequels that are nothing but an offensive regurgitation of an uninspired writer for the sake of ticket sales. I waited a year before seeing T2, mainly due to the fact I just can't stomach disappointment any more than I have to. That being said, in this case, I will honestly and humbly admit that I was entirely mistaken.

It's almost criminal how complimentary this film is to the first. Danny Boyle gives us a beautiful take on nostalgia and friendship, but also the perils of growing up and growing older. The first 2/3 of the first Trainspotting mostly centers on a gang of stringy Scots trudging through Edinburgh looking for their next fix. While T2 does focus on the penultimate betrayal as seen in its predecessor, us viewers are treated to a reintroduction to the beloved gang and how the past twenty years have treated them. Had this film been released ten, even five years ago, it wouldn't hold the wait of the two decade span. The comedic reunion of seeing Spud's dopey grin, Sick Boy's thatch of peroxide blonde hair, and Begbie's complete and utter lunacy is like a ragtag homecoming with mates who will never let you forget where you came from- whether you'd like to or not. In the case of our dear Renton, we see the effects of deep-seeded grudges, but even deeper bonds.

Choose Boyle. Choose ruddy Scots. Choose optimism about movies. Choose love. And, as always, choose life.

As high quality a sequel as one is likely to get for this sort of film. Derivative? Sure. But that was the point.

Loved watching the follow up to this cult classic. Such cool, creative and well done movies. I watched the first one again recently as well so the conclusion was especially poignant and nostalgic.

Since I have not watched the first film I may have been left out on much of details and background to the characters which, unfortunately, I don't care much about. I found the plot fragmented, and hard to follow. So for me this is one disappointing film from director Doyle who has done some good works.

Surprisingly good sequel. BUT, you don't really HAVE TO have seen the original to be able to figure out what's going on, as there are sufficient flashbacks to follow the story. This was much better than we had expected. Well worth a watch.

As much of a classic as the first movie was. My friends all loved it. I didn't care for it but the baby scene always stood out. I actually enjoyed this one. Not one you would watch over and over but definitely entertaining. Also loved how they used the characters in this as more realistic with it literally being years later both in and out of the movie

A worthy sequel. Some of us change after 20 years, some do not. Like the boys, once we hit middle age, we start asking ourselves some questions. Renton's rant is epic and horribly true.

Tons of quotes in IMDb that include Renton's spiel on "Choose Life."
