Based on the true life story of a young Marine Corporal whose unique discipline and bond with her military combat dog saved many lives during their deployment in Iraq. When she is assigned to clean up the K9 unit after a disciplinary hearing, Leavey identifies with a particularly aggressive dog, Rex, and is given the chance to train him. Over the course of their service, Megan and Rex completed more than 100 missions until an IED explosion injures them, putting their fate in jeopardy.

Agree with comments by LauraSteinert and surprised at how much of the dramatized events were real. See link in "Summary" that compared the real life of Leavey and Rex to those depicted in the film. Not just another desert war film for sure.

Great movie, some bad language and bad behavior.

Beautifully done story of a troubled woman and a troubled dog who go to war. Not over the top on emotions, blood and gore, nor sex. Just a great movie that inspires and uplifts but does not gloss over the trauma and the PTSS of modern war survivors. I highly recommend this one.

Maybe I was in the mood for a great dog story......or maybe this is a very good movie.....moving but not too sentimental. Lead actress was so believable in this true story.

I was not familiar with the actress Kate Mara before this movie. I thought she was excellent. I felt like she embodied the character Megan Leavey both in her despair and her determination.
This is one of those films that deserves a wider audience for the love of animals and humanity.
Also it was interesting to see the way that soldiers work with dogs and how the dogs are also considered soldiers. I thought it was an anthropomorphic description but they truly are considered one of the battalion.
I look forward to seeing Kate Mara in some future endeavor.

Excellent true story, sensitively done.

Very good movie. Better than I expected. I'd give it 4 stars. Anyone that likes dogs, and many that don't, should like it.

Less action “in country” than I expected ... but we did enjoy it ...

Excellent movie. The service dogs are true warriors. Soldiers and their dogs develop a bond that is very special. This true story is a tear jerker. Well worth watching.

The dead-end job. The getting fired from the dead-end job for being hung over. Yeah. This isn't working.
You don't leave because you have somewhere to go, you leave because nothing is keeping you there.
Geez, you'd think with all the taxes we give to the military, they'd come up
with some kind of street sign situation.
Do we know the meaning of the words "won't," "can't" or "late"?
-No, master sergeant.
Gunny, how do I become a dog handler?
Yeah. What do I have to do exactly?
-For starters, you need to stop screwing up. Then you'll need an expert rifle score, above 90% on all your exams, a first-class PFT.
They're not even dogs anymore. They're warriors, and they come back with all the same issues we do.
... he was just scared and probably confused. Probably just as confused and scared as I was at the time.
