I always hesitate to watch non-fiction, especially when its a 'based on' show. It either is too real or too much!
Having said that, I loved this movie. All those things that they say are true, "I laughed, I cried, etc. etc."....
There is nothing hidden or kept back, and you will want to know more about them both. The truth is almost stranger than the movie!

This is about the best "Anglo-Canadian" film in recent years, with caveat: director Aisling Walsh is Irish, the Nova Scotian story was filmed in Newfoundland's quaintly photogenic outports and the leads are non-Canadians, eh? Yet Hawkins & Hawke's portrayals are magnetically-tuned and the production team so very dedicated (check out the vintage cars) that we have to embrace this Canadian film (winner of Audience Award @ VIFF 2017). For the true-blue Canadian films (please ASK your libraries to get them): The Grey Fox (B.C.), Bye Bye Blue (Alberta), Who Has seen the Wind (Sask), John & the Missus (NFLD), etc. As far as Québec films go, they are miles ahead of the Anglo-Canadians: the films of Robert Lepage, Denis Villeneuve, Xavier Dolan, Jean-Marc Vallée, etc. most of them gone Hollywood, though their best films were their first, firmly rooted in La Belle Province.

Absolutely wonderful movie with a stellar performance given by Sally Hawkins. 5 big stars and a must see.

I came at this with low expectations. Was I ever wrong. What a delightful little film! One of the best I’ve seen in years. Refreshing.

The ensemble of deleted scenes, fortunately provided by the producers of Maudie, is indispensable for illuminating the framing of the film. We must find ourselves in life, otherwise we let it fruitlessly slip away. No dress rehearsal or opportunity proffered for a redo. This motion picture evokes a poignancy in regard to the bits and pieces of daily accommodation, compromise, and discovery we make from which our experiences derive, perpetually molding a resiliency manifested by few today. The aesthetic portrayal of seasons continually passing, evinced cyclically by the landscape in flux, historically by the contents of one's surroundings, serves to remind, in a fine-drawn fashion, how fleeting time is. Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke are superbly cast to tell the tale, creating spellbinding, indelible portrayals of Maud and Everett Lewis. Unequivocally, a tour de force.

Highly recommended! A wonderful movie based on a true story. A love story, but not. What an amazing spirit Maude had, to survive as she did and create those joyful images in spite of it! I don't want to give away more than that, but suffice to say there is a lot more going on in this movie than you would think. Magnificent acting by the 2 leads (both should AT LEAST get Oscar nods). Very well told which is probably attributable to the director. Watch the deleted scenes (and the extras for a glimpse of the real people on whom it's based). One of the best films of the year.
