The moving and suspenseful new novel that Ann Patchett calls "smart and thrilling and impossible to put down... the book that every reader longs for."

“This summer’s undoubtable smash hit… an addictive, heart-palpitating story.” —Marie Claire

The sun is shining, the sea is blue, the children have disappeared.

When Liv and Nora decide to take their husbands and children on a holiday cruise, everyone is thrilled. The adults are lulled by the ship’s comfort and ease. The four children—ages six to eleven—love the nonstop buffet and their newfound independence. But when they all go ashore for an adventure in Central America, a series of minor misfortunes and miscalculations leads the families farther from the safety of the ship. One minute the children are there, and the next they’re gone.
The disintegration of the world the families knew—told from the perspectives of both the adults and the children—is both riveting and revealing. The parents, accustomed to security and control, turn on each other and blame themselves, while the seemingly helpless children discover resources they never knew they possessed.
Do Not Become Alarmed is a story about the protective force of innocence and the limits of parental power, and an insightful look at privileged illusions of safety. Celebrated for her spare and moving fiction, Maile Meloy has written a gripping novel about how quickly what we count on can fall away, and the way a crisis shifts our perceptions of what matters most.

This was a quick read and the plot moved along well enough, but I didn’t really feel much of a connection with any of the main characters. Some aspects of the book were interesting and I really liked the author’s previous book of short stories, Both Ways Is the Only Way I Want It, so I look forward to reading more of her work even though I didn’t particularly care for this novel.

It was hard to like the parents, but the varying POV kept my interest. Believable how quickly things went askew and sad how the adults treated each other.

Lost children thriller falters 2/3 in, parents are obnoxious

This was a good thriller that you can't put down. Lost during a cruise the children of these three couples must keep themselves alive and get back to their parents. The parents are a little annoying as they are depicted as those that have it all - money, fame and the nice houses, etc. and now are dealing with this tragedy. Once you pick it up you will not want to put it down.

Very thrilling and fast paced. I had to know how it ended because, it is really a thriller. But these are some of the most annoying and obnoxious people, ever.

Didn't like any of the affluent adult characters in this story. The whole plot sounds exciting, but there were too many events that seemed unlikely plus the children acted too mature for their supposed ages. Unsatisfying overall.

I'm pretty sure they were in Costa Rica. A gripping, better-than-average thriller. I read this book into the early hours of the morning to finish it. I needed to know what happened. The author tied up all the loose ends, it's not a happily-ever-after ending, either. One of my favorite books of the summer, not for its eloquent language, but for its thick plot and the fact that it kept me hooked until the end.

I picked this book up and started reading one Saturday morning, and then didn't put it down until the book was done, several hours later. Nothing about this book is ground-breaking or *new*; however it is suspenseful and compelling. I can see this book being adapted into a movie, for sure. The story is told from alternating perspectives of several different characters, which is always a fun plot device that moves the story forward.

There's no need to become alarmed. You're on a cruise ship somewhere in Central America.
You go ashore for an excursion that goes horribly wrong and now you've lost your kids.
Where did they go?
The clock is ticking...will the kids be found unharmed and well?
Go on this fast paced, gut wrenching adventure with three sets of parents as they try to find their kids in a somewhat corrupt country. Put this one on your summer reading list.
