An excellent memoir about the rocky terrain of friendship in grades 3-5. Relatable, moving, and . . . real.

Good graphic novel. It illustrated one of the things that is wrong with yesterday's millennials and today's youth. Perfect to get that point across to them. Something for society to ponder.

This book touched on so many things that happened in my own youth. As a person who grew up with social anxiety, this touched me tremendously. I really bonded with the main character and I was really rooting for her. This is an excellent book to show how to handle cliques and would be bullies.

This book hit very close to home. It's as if Shannon had a window into my grade school life. We both started kindergarten the same year me I suffered through friends all through elementary school. I truly think so many kids will connect with this book and see themselves in Shannon's story. This is a great graphic novel. You get a real sense of Shannon's sense of awkwardness. I loved the early 80s fashions and references to pop culture at the time when being the fan of a particular group could make or break your coolness. I'm sure it's still the same but having a tape of a group was such a sense of coolness. Wonderful book!

Astonishing artwork, this is an honest graphic novel, capturing the most honest and heartfelt stories about friendship. Awesome!

Elementary school is hard. Making friends is hard. Making friends when you're a girl who doesn't quite get the complexity of girl friendships in elementary school is a real mess. Shannon Hale, in this fictionalized graphic memoir, recounts her elementary school years and the friends she made and didn't make and how she never knew whether she was in or out of The Group. This will be very familiar to a lot of people - it was certainly familiar to me. To add to Shannon's story is family concerns (she's the middle child, one of her sisters is not the nicest of people and has her own problems) and her own mental health concerns.

It's a familiar story but everyone's story is a little different and I liked reading Shannon's. It was very normal and very usual, in fun ways and not so fun ways, and the art was cute and fabulous too. A win all around.

As someone who grew up in the same time period, and also suffered from red hair and anxiety, this book hit me right in the feels. The challenges of making new friends and keeping old is portrayed accurately and will resonate with any elementary child. Also, THE TOPS OF CARROTS ARE GREEN SO WHY DID THEY CALL US "CARROT TOP?"

I loved everything about this book- the writing, the characters, the illustrations, the TIME PERIOD. I’m a proud child of the 80’s and this took me back to my absolute favorite decade.

This is a lovely, heartfelt graphic memoir that I think should find a wide audience among kids who love Raina Telgemeier’s work, among others. This look at the complex dynamics of friendships, the feelings of being “in” one moment and “out” the next, felt so real and so resonant – I think kids will lap this up, and probably see a lot of their own lives represented here, despite the fact that it’s set in the ‘80s. Highly recommended.
