Priyanka Das has so many unanswered questions: Why did her mother abandon her home in India years ago? What was it like there? And most importantly, who is her father, and why did her mom leave him behind? But Pri’s mom avoids these questions—the topic of India is permanently closed.

For Pri, her mother's homeland can only exist in her imagination. That is, until she find a mysterious pashmina tucked away in a forgotten suitcase. When she wraps herself in it, she is transported to a place more vivid and colorful than any guidebook or Bollywood film. But is this the real India? And what is that shadow lurking in the background? To learn the truth, Pri must travel farther than she’s ever dared and find the family she never knew.

In this heartwarming graphic novel debut, Nidhi Chanani weaves a tale about the hardship and self-discovery that is born from juggling two cultures and two worlds.

Pashmina is the story of an Indian-American teenage girl, named Priyanka Das, who lives with her single mother. Although she’s curious about India and her father, her mother consistently avoids these topics. However, when she finds a magical Pashmina that can transport her to India, Priyanka begins to journey to her mother’s homeland and find the answers to her questions. Along the way, she also learns about managing her cross-cultural identity and the challenges faced by women. Ultimately, her experiences empower her to be confident in who she is and make her voice heard.

Priyanka finds a magic pashmina in an old suitcase, which ultimately helps her to learn about her family's past and her own identity. This short graphic novel was cute and a quick read, ideal for preteens.

This was such a magically little book that explores a family’s immigration story through a magic pashmina. This graphic novel was so heartwarming and comfortable, and while I am not Indian and have not had what happen to Priyanka’s family, the author does an amazing job of getting the read to empathize with the experiences in the story. The art was adorable and vibrant as well. Definitely worth checking out if you love graphic novels.
