Over the last few decades, Americans have turned college admissions into a terrifying and occasionally devastating process, preceded by test prep, tutors, all sorts of stratagems, all kinds of rankings, and a conviction among too many young people that their futures will be determined and their worth established by which schools say yes and which say no. That belief is wrong. It's cruel. And in this book, Frank Bruni explains why, giving students and their parents a new perspective on this brutal, deeply flawed competition and a path out of the anxiety that it provokes.

All parents of prospective college students obsessed with getting their kids into big-name schools should read this book. Lots of successful people went to colleges that one never has heard of. Bottom line: The school one goes to probably doesn't make that much difference. It is the person's hard work, motivation and initiative that does.

I am not heading to college nor is anybody in my family. Yet I found this book really informative and interesting. The mania which takes over students' lives when college admissions season hits is just unbelievable and Bruni addresses this mania. He wonders if it is well-deserved and makes a good case for the converse.

A well-researched and well-written book. It'll help many students in their senior years and their parents set their priorities right.

A must read for parents and college bound students. Learn what Ivy League and other name brand schools really look for in an applicant. Save time and money by not wasting efforts on schools that recruit to reject. For further reading, "Excellent Sheep"' by Deresiewicz. Also see comments for the novel, "Early Decision ."
