Summary

Ida B. considers the apple trees on the family farm her friends. She names some of the trees and has long talks with them. She is a child who is full of wonder and joy. But, Ida B's happy existence is shattered when her Mother is diagnosed with cancer. Along with her fear and worry for her Mother, Ida B. experiences overwhelming anger with the sale of the family's apple orchards to cover medical expenses. The author’s portrayal of Ida B’s anguish and her eventual healing is spot on.
