Farley Mowat (1921-2014) – ‘The Dog Who Wouldn’t Be,’ what a delightful book with numerous short humorous stories about a boy and his best friend - Mutt. This is one of Mowat’s earlier works, (1957). This was the second book by Mowat that I have read and while I enjoyed it, I preferred ‘Lost in the Barrens.’ While it is rated Juvenile, I cannot agree at all with that rating. Clearly the vocabulary is more suited to Adult as I think many of the descriptive words used by Mowat would challenge readers age 8 through 12. I particularly enjoyed the story of Mutts tangle with the skunks under his grandparents cabin, and Farley’s entanglement with a skunk as they slid down a greased mud slide, his banishment from the cabin by the lake as his elders could not bear the smell of him and then, the subsequent account of Farley trying to first rid himself of the odour of skunk and then disguise it from his date later the next evening at a dance, pages 187 to 190. This book can be enjoyed by anyone, perhaps 13 years of age or older. Recommended reading by Senior Doctor-at-Bass-Fishing! D. A.
