Heck

Where the Bad Kids Go

There's no getting around it: this is a really weird book. How else would you describe a book about two kids trapped in the evil reforamatory of Heck (based on Dante's Divine Comedy), where new(-ly dead) arrivals are welcomed by singing lizards and classes are taught by the likes of Richard Nixon (ethics), Lizzie Borden (home ec), and Blackbeard (PE)? Weirdness is what makes this book awesome, along with its truly humorous dark humor and puns that are actually funny. Probably not to everyone's tastes (it can be a bit of a dense read), but if you like it, make sure to read the sequels.
