Catherine Rayner is the author of several fabulous picture books (Solomon Crocodile, Augustus and His Smile) and one of my favorite books by her is Ernest, the Moose Who Doesn't Fit. It is perfect for talking about differences in people (or moose) and also about friendship because of the silent but ever helpful chipmunk who never gives up on Ernest. Ernest is trying his hardest to fit into the book which is clearly too small for his sprawling and epic moose-y bulk. The play with language as he struggles to fit in is great fun to read aloud. "He struggles to SHIMMY, SHIFT, and SHUFFLE in forward. He tries to SQUIDGE, SQUODGE, and SQUEEZE in backward." Together Ernest and his buddy find a unique way to get him settled fully inside the book. Kids love the big, fold out solution. The artwork is quirky, bold and, of course, BIG as each page is filled with moose bits. They may not talk but Ernest and chipmunk pop with personality and happy friendship. This is a great read aloud for a group or one small friend.
