Beautifully photographed, with no script, and virtually no speech other than a few words from the mothers and babbling by the babies, this documentary follows 4 different babies--2 girls, 2 boys--from birth through their first year of life as they are raised in Namibia, Mongolia, Japan, and the US (the Bay Area). We found the film fascinating, as it so clearly showed that despite their environments, babies are babies and mothers are mothers the whole world over. The film also appeared to demonstrate that happy and healthy babies can be successfully raised even outside the somewhat sterile environment of the modern, developed world. Be sure to catch the extra feature when the filmmaker returns to visit the children when they are 3 yrs old. Highly recommended. (I should also add that I am not normally all that interested in babies, but I still loved it)
