I loved this series, and its been a while since I've slogged through massive books with such enthusiasm. The depth into which Follett delves into history and creates a complex, engaging, and sophisticated backstory is admirable. My favorite characters from the first book are referenced decades (almost 100 years) later, and that connection gave me a fondness for their descendants' trials and tribulations. Though it's no solid history text, it makes me eager to read some hardcore history, especially about the East/West Berlin divide, on which he spends quite a lot of time and crafts much of the story around. Follett has a knack for getting you to care for his characters, and feel agonized as history throws nearly each and every one of them relentless curve balls. My empathy was wholly exploited, and I loved every minute of it!
