Step Aside, Pops

a Hark! A Vagrant Collection

This book made me laugh audibly, deep into the night. I was a fan of Beaton's first collection, Hark a Vagrant, which is just as good, but this time around I noticed how completely amazing she is at capturing facial expressions in what look like hastily scratched caricatures of famous literary and historical figures. Her work reminds me of the kind of sketches we made as kids of older siblings, parents, and teachers, which occasionally induced uncontrollable laughter due to remarkable accuracy, even in their roughness. If you like books, history, and laughing, you will adore this.
