Ingmar Bergman, one of the three greatest film directors of the twentieth century, scripted this film after he had quit directing films. Unlike his other films, this is a story from real life (the story being the courtship(s?) and early marriage of Bergman’s parents), which makes it extremely difficult to predict what is going to happen next. Sometimes real life can lead to a greater story than the best of fiction. This film won the Cannes Palme d’Or, meaning that in Europe’s opinion, it was the best film of the year. While this version was 182 minutes duration, there is actually a European TV version that is six hour duration.
