This is a cozy read. The poor young detective – he’s hesitant, charming and naïve as he heads from everything and everyone he cares for in Reykjavik, to a small town in northern Iceland to further his career in homicide. The eve of his arrival plunges him into the maelstrom of small town life, as a prominent citizen appears to have accidentally fallen in a stairwell. The entire cast is assembled: the Jovial Comrade, the Quiet Man, the Bully, the Tart, the Careful Assitant, and the Lover, while fate, in the form of a blinding storm seals the town from outside assistance. While the mind chips away at the culprit, the story slowly progresses amid the high tors of the Icelandic landscape. If you’re interested, the town is well represented in Google Street Maps and the sheer cliffs and vistas of sky and water are breathtaking. I’m curious to see where the author takes this series and if he can burnish his character with a touch more knowing, intuition and decisiveness as he grows into his role and becomes a part of the isolated landscape of Northern Iceland.
