Murder mystery from an Icelandic author. The books have been labeled Dark Icelandic Series. In book one “Snowblind” we meet the protagonist Ari Thor, a young man who has given up his religious studies to go to police college. He soon lands a job as a police officer in Siglufjörđur, the northern most town in Iceland near the arctic circle. The weather plays a main character in the novel. I have never been to Iceland, but Ari Thor gets a bit claustrophobic by the white; mountains, hills, non-stop snow. He is treated as an “outsider” since he came from elsewhere and everyone pretty much knows everything about everyone else in the small town. The police force consists of 3 men including Ari Thor. A woman is discovered near death and bleeding. People told Ari Thor he needn’t bother locking his door because nothing ever happens in the small town, but this unusual incident followed by another death that may have been an accident or may have been a murder - the entire town is confused and upset. So, Ari enters this unusual setting, back home his girlfriend is behaving oddly and everything seems to adding to his snowblind claustrophobia. Author Ragnar Jonasson has created interesting characters in an interesting setting. He adds new characters every step of the way and has one character reliving an ongoing flashback, so I got a bit confused who was who, but stick with it, good murder mystery. Book 2 “Nightblind” is available and SPL has book 3 “Blackout” on order.
