Born a Crime

[Stories From a South African Childhood]
Feb 03, 2018Bududo rated this title 4.5 out of 5 stars
This is a terrific read providing great observations about living in one of the most racist countries in modern times. The author - Trevor Noah - brings forth several stories from his childhood in Apartheid South Africa told from a unique vantage point of being mixed race (black mother and white father). His parents were proscribed from marrying much less socializing in public. He manages to relate his story with humor, poignancy, and keen observation and introspection. His mother was indeed quite a woman bring up a family in a society that both heavily racist and sexist all the while resisting and driving out of her sons any self-pitying thoughts. The audio by the author is terrific because of his ability to speak the various African languages. There are a few places where the chronology is somewhat confusing due to the time overlap of some of the stories.
