Demetri Martin is writer, director, and actor. He is Dean. His abilities rank in reverse order. He is a good actor, a fair director and, ultimately, a poor writer. This movie really has nothing to say which would be alright if it had something else to offer. But it falls into that trap that so many "coming of age" movies do. All the women in the film are 2- dimensional characters. Demetri gives us "lovable mom," "woman he wants to sleep with," "annoying yakker," and "heartless bitch." Mary Steenburgen is the only one who escapes such a fate, but she is not given enough screen time to shine. She is the love interest of Kevin Kline who plays Dean's father. Seeing these two fine actors made me want the story to be about them and not the self-indulgent Dean. Besides Mary and Kevin, the only saving grace of the movie are Dean's darkly funny illustrations.
