The book became tiring to listen to after a while, despite a fairly good narration, and the concept of a book within a book wasn't enough to elevate the fairly humdrum and predictable whodunnit to a level that engaged the emotions. As more and more references to Agatha Christie and the potboiler kind of mystery writing accumulated, they explained the lack of appeal for me. Christie has never been a favourite mystery writer for me, the books always feel contrived and plotted rather than a natural exposition. The book seems to be a tribute to that style of fiction and despite some interesting echoes between the levels of the fictional concept, the plot plodded.
