A powerful memoir about family, identity, and mental illness. 'Educated' is about a girl who grew up with her dysfunctional family in the mountains of Idaho. Being the youngest of seven children, Tara grew up in a household full of abuse and neglect, therefore she experienced an incredibly difficult childhood and life. Tara suspects that her father suffered from bipolar disorder and paranoia, which was never diagnosed or treated since he didn't trust doctors and or the government. Her extremist parents did not believe in sending their children to school. Through much hard work and perseverance, Tara passed the ACT exam and thus managed to get accepted into university, so the first time Tara ever stepped foot in a classroom was when she attended her first university class at the age of 17. She became educated and went on to graduate with honours, attended England's University of Cambridge, Harvard University, and also earned her PhD. Tara overcame all of the hardship and it's astonishing that she managed to achieve all that she did especially after the abuse and turmoil she faced.
